How the Whidbey Community Saved Our Old Growth Forests

Sue Ellen White, longtime resident and journalist, will tell the story of saving Whidbey’s old growth forests. Less than five percent of the forests in our Puget lowlands contain old-growth remnants. And rarer still are floating forests like that at South Whidbey State Park. Learn the fascinating story of how the Whidbey community took on the state and the forest industry to save the 255-acres at the park known as Classic U from clearcutting beginning in 1977. Sue Ellen is a founding member of Save the Trees, which spearheaded the 15-year conservation effort that forever changed forest practices in Washington State and pioneered new environmental preservation programs. Learn how Island County Transit is making it easier for those with mobility challenges to still enjoy some of the hikes available in our parks. Maribeth Crandell from Island Transit will present “Walks with Wheels,”  a program for those who want to hike but have mobility issues. “Walks with Wheels” also includes families with kids on bikes, or bike paths. Enjoy a delicious dinner plus a concert by Clinton’s very own Heggenes Valley Band followed by dancin’ with DJ vramanos!
